Obviously, there are many elements of a horror game that make it scary but I thought it would be interesting if we all considered the three most essential elements/factors that make a horror game truly scary . So I'll start-
1. Playing alone- I think this one is huge. I've never felt scared after a horror video game, like I would after a horror movie, but I'm definitely scared while playing. I may feel a bit more anxious about how I'm playing when I'm with a group but it's much less terrifying to have people close by than when you're alone.
2. Playing in the dark- again, something that has nothing to do with the actual game but with the space in which you're playing it. Lights out really puts you in the place of the character, especially if it's a first-person shooter. It's often dark in the game's setting, so you feel like you're in it and a zombie may be right over your shoulder behind your desk chair.
3. Eerie music- I felt most anxious and scared during Left 4 Dead when I was standing in an alley with not a zombie in sight and the music's pace began to quicken. Soon enough, zombies were jumping down on me from the roofs of the buildings above me.
Agree/disagree???
